Food therapy has been used as medicine in both humans and animals for thousands of years. Food therapy is the art and science of using selected food ingredients and/or superior herbs to feed each individual based upon their age, species, geographical location, personality and current disharmony or disease process.
Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine food therapy is used for the treatment of specific health conditions (primary or adjunct therapy), health promotion and prevention. This involves the implementation of special foods or elimination of certain foods that your pet is currently being fed based on the Traditional Chinese Food Energetics classification and TCVM diagnosis.
Dr. Nolin will use a nutritional software system called BalanceIT to formulate recipes based specifically on your pets needs.
It is recommended to follow up every 3-6 months to monitor your pet when feeding a home-cooked diet as adjustments may be needed.
Please note that a food therapy consultation is NOT equivalent to consulting with a board certified veterinary nutritionist.

Food therapy is an integral part of treating disease using an eastern medicine approach whether it be to promote healing/restore balance in the body or for prevention.
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” dates back to Hippocrates, the father of medicine. This quote, though thousands of years old, acknowledges the importance of healthy eating and how the nutrients in various foods have healing properties.
Every pet should be fed a well-balanced fresh or whole food diet.
Food therapy can be added to your pet's diet in a variety of ways, this can include using specific fresh foods as toppers to your pet's current diet and home-prepared treats or snacks.
Prepared fresh based diets are commercially available and Dr. Nolin can help you choose the best option for your pet. However, if able an individually tailored diet to your pet's specific condition will help achieve the best results.
